I would have to say Rukia and Renji's childhood past, growing up in such a harsh and violent world that didn't care for children, constantly on the move and doing whatever they needed to survive, and the fact that they eventually lost all of their friends while growing up.

Definitely Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin.
Since young he has seen people around him die.
His parents died of cholera. His adopted family were killed by slave masters. Heck he even killed his own wife! And for a ****ing long time he has been living with this. Till today, he does not forget the day he buried his adopted family, the days living with Tomoe, his life as an assassin. And on one could relieve the pain he feels in his heart, not even Kaoru.

I second that :D
Saiyuki - Cho Hakkai's past is actually pretty sad too. Losing his wife and turning into a demon. Plus he has a permanent emotional scar as a result
Nami's past from One Piece. It's so sad how she lost her most important person in her life and wasted a lot of her life working for nothing, until she was rescued by Luffy.

Chichiri from Fushigi Yuugi had a pretty tragic past..
he believed his best childhood friend and love of his life were having an affair,
when really, the friend had tried to kiss her, and she refused, but felt as if she had unwillingly
betrayed Chichiri, so she left him. Chichiri then fought his best friend to the death :( [twice, actually o_o*]
actually, Nuriko and Mitsukake also had really tragic events in their past..

Sousake...forgot his last name from FMP Fumoffu (never seen the original FMP)
He's lived under war conditions since he was born always thinking like a soldier, while normal kids his age went to school and lived normal lives going to school and hanging out with friends.
Then he has to protect a girl, and adjust to live "normally"

I put my vote for Gen in Barefoot Gen. He was in Hiroshima when America bombed them and he saw his father, brother and sister die in front of him. He also saw numerous others die from radiation exposure. And then his new borne sisters dies. A very sad tale.

Too many for me to write all so I'll quote a few. ^^
Almost all the characters in Fruits Basket have sad pasts but the most significant ones would be Tohru, Yuki, Kyou, Hatori, Momiji, Rin, Hanajima etc.
Tohru - Her father died when she was very young. After his death, relatives kept gossiping behind that her mother (Kyoko) failed as a wife and whether Tohru is really a legitimate daughter. Tohru who heard it all felt really sad and strived to 'act' like her father (that explains her good manners ^^). She was inseparable from her mother all the years until Kyoko died in an accident one day. Tohru was regretful as she did not bid her mother goodbye on that particular day. She developed quite a complex *cough* she believes she shouldn't love anyone besides her mother!! (And I think this is the 'obstacle' Rin once said.)
Yuki - His parents 'sold' him out to Akito who harass him mentally and pyshically. His brother, Ayame, too, was oblivious of his existence. He was locked in the dark room most of the times until Shigure took him away from the Souma's main house.
Kyou - Since he is the outcast, he was treated like dirt. His mother committed suicide because of the pressure and his father blamed him for her death.
Hatori - (My fav char!!!!) He wanted to marry Kana but Akito objected and blinded his left eye. For Kana's sake, he erased her memories and in the end, she married someone else *sniffs*
Momiji - His mother couldn't accept the fact he is one of the jyuunishi so his father requested Hatori to erase her memories. Momiji cannot acknowledged his own mother and his younger sister in order not to trigger his mother's past memories.
Rin - Her parents abused her when she was young. When Akito finds out her relationship with Hatsuharu, she threw her out of the window.
Hanajima - She has the powers to listen to other people's inner voices and because of it, she kept distant from people. She became the object of harassment until she met Tohru and Arisa.
Other characters would be...uhm....
Nakago (Ayuru) - Yes, he is a villain in FY but his past really sucks. The Kutou army attacked his tribe and tried to rape his mother. Out of anger, he awakened the seishi power within him and send a blast that kills both the soldier and his mother. He was then brought to the Kutou palace but he refused to display his powers before the emperor. The emperor then brought out one of the survivors of the tribe who is also a good friend of Nakago and threaten to kill her. He refused because he's afraid his powers will hurt her just like he did to his mother. The little girl was killed before his eyes and the impact of it turned him into a cold, emotionless person. Due to the fact he is a Seiryuu seishi, he got to stay in the palace and became a *cough*plaything*cough* of the perverted emperor. His father is a general of the Kutou kingdom but never made any attempts to save him...in the end, when he tried to stop his son for I-cannot-remember-what-reason (^^;;), Nakago end up killing his own father.
Sumeragi Subaru - His twin sister was killed by the guy he loves (Seishirou, an assassin known as Sakurazukamori). *cough* (yep, it's shounen-ai XD) He vowed revenge on Seishirou but deep in him, he has a different wish. He couldn't bring himself to kill Seishirou and when Seishirou stabbed him, it was instead Seishirou himself who suffered the injury. It was because Subaru's sister (Hokuto), before her death, casted a spell on Seishirou and made it known to him. If Seishirou ever tries to kill Subaru in the same way he killed Hokuto, the spell will deflect it and it will be Seishirou who dies. So, indirectly, it's Subaru who killed him. But after all, a Sakurazukamori can ONLY be killed by the person he loves. *sobs*
OMG~! This is a long post. Sorry, sorry....*sweatdrops*

everyone in fruits basket had sad lives too, can't really remember it because it was too depressing
Ceres's past in ayashi no ceres was really sad too, i felt so bad for her since her husband took away her hagoromo when she wasn't going to leave and had to kill him :(

Graveyard of the Fireflies is a tearjerker. It's almost guaranteed to make you bawl. I've read that it's actually based off (or inspired by) the real life experience of the producer or the director (forgot which one), who's little sister died in the aftermath of WW2, except that he survived, while in the movie both Setsuko and her little sister die.

yeah, I heard that one too. I think it was the director. Thats just crazy. That was a truly sad incident.
Naruto's past is kinda sad that he was ignored, at best, or hated. Thats always messed up to place that type of feeling on children. I relate more to Hyuga's past though. Being cast into the branch family, his father dying to save his uncle, just a bad situation.

I found that almost all of the characters in Naruto had some sort of ruined past, Naruto/Gaara were both hated for something they couldn't control. Sasuke had his family massacred, Chouji was the fat kid no one liked. Hyuuga Hinata was pressured immensely to succeed. Hyuua Neji was had his father executed for the Main Branch. Then there was Kakashi's father who was branded as a weakling for saving his friend in place of the mission. Obito got crushed in front of Kakashi's eyes. I haven't even factored in Kimimaro or any ninjas not from konoha.
The anime itself is funny, but the pasts are much darker. -_-

Well Naruto picked up from a war between ninja countries and the Kyuubi attack. So a lot of people have probably lost one or two relatives/friends as a result.
Actually One Piece also has a lot of sad pasts. Chopper's past is pretty sad...I hope they'll get to Robin's past soon. Hers seems very dark

Like Kakashi.....when he said to Sasuke "I have nothing to lose.......because I've lost everyone dear to me." That sounded so sad though he said it with a smiling face. ~_~

Well like people have said most people have really sad pasts in fruits basket. I almost cried in that Momiji ep XD
I also agree Nami from one piece had a really sad past, especially with her thinking everyone in the village hated her.
And poor Rukia has an awful past! ;_;
She died as a baby, was abandoned, had to live on the streets, almost all her street friends died, got into the acadamy but wasnt good enough to keep up with Renji, got adopted by a family who showed her no affection, became isolated, had to kill the man she loved, lost her shinigami powers, thought she witnessed ichigo dying, got put on death row.......
an I think thats it @_@ The poor girls way over due for a mental breakdown.
An of course theres Kenshin but thats a no brainer XD

You guys have hit on some major points but no one has seemed to mention anyone from Bebop
What do you think of Spike's past? Having to leave the woman you love to protect her is always sad.
Faye's past is also very sad.

How about a character with no past...can that be considered sad? Like Rei Ayanami from Evangelion. If not, then Fruits Basket's Honda Tohru.

actually, i will bring a case from peace maker kurogane, which i have just watched recently. Tetsu and Tatsu are two brothers that their past has haunted them for the whole series under the last episode. Even so, tatsu the elder brother is still haunted by it for the ghost in his heart is never really extinguished. With all the laughter and all, most of the smiling characters in the series (Okita, Tetsu, Ayu-nee) have really bad pasts.

Actually, almost all characters in Evangelion has a very sad past O.o They have either lost someone, got rejected or suffer due to second impact and their past keeps on haunting them as the story progresses

Tohru from Fruits Basket has definitely had a gloomy past, but so have all the other characters in the show - it's strange how such a nice series could have such tragic characters..
Also, Elfen Lied's Lucy/Nyuu has had a horrible past too considering her being a Dioclonius (sp?).
Chrno Crusade's four main characters: Rosette, Chrno, Azmaria and Satella. They've all had some sorta tragic incident happen to them.
The Elric Brothers have had a sad past too, but that's what started the series in the first place.
Yoshitsune

Yeah, the Elric brothers experienced pain which led them to go on a quest...can't think of any other ones that have not been mentioned
