Just found out not too long ago. Anime News Network just recently released the news, stating ShoPro as the licensor for the Naruto anime franchise.

It was quite a shock and out of left field, but I suppose they will do an average job. If you don't know, ShoPro and Viz are merged, so the dubbing will be done by OceanGroup, the dubbing group who brought you Inuyasha, Gundam Wing, and such.

Personally, for the first time I'm a bit indifferent on an anime licence. It's either "SON OF A *****! NOT 4KIDS!!!!" or "hey, cool beans." Now, I guess it's more like an, "oh... oh, okay" kinda thing for me >_>

So, hopefully we'll get a decent dub out of this with a decent translation. Nothing spectacular, but nothing severely craptastic. Viz are in the middleground, I find, and they'll be satisfactory. It's only that Naruto deserves a dynamic release that I'm slightly dissapointed.

god ****it... they better not **** it up..

I hope they don't use the Viz manga translations, ie. Doppleganger technique for Kage Bunshin, and Valentine technique for Ino's body switch thingy, or journeyman for Chuunin. That sort of thing would be insanly annoying.

Since i have all the anime episodes and manga chapters of Naruto, I really dont care who does the dubbing just as long as they dont make any of the voices sound like they're just reaching puberty.

In that case, has anyone seen the dub scripts for the other shows that OceanGroup has done? Chances are good that the qualities of Naruto and those other shows' scripts should correlate very closely.

well he just said (rashinban) that they did inu yahsa...the only time ive bothered watching that was cuz i wanted to see cowboy bebop....the show is bad enough but the dub makes u turn of the TV...gundam wing wasnt too bad tho'...

Rashinban
02-15-2005, 05:06 PM
About the only anime that I currently watch that is a OceanGroup dub job is Inuyasha, and from what it seems they do a decent translation job, it's just that the voice acting can be downright disgusting at times. They also make some odd translation choices that aren't necessarily incorrect; just annoying or a little too quirky: for example Kaede in Inuyasha using archaic English in place of her archaic Japanese, such as "thee" and "thou" and junk like that. It's just really out of place when the main characters talk like normal people. I wouldn't know what would be the possible equivalent in Naruto, though.

I also remember watching Gundam Wing quite some time ago and I never really had a problem with it. I actually really liked Gundam Wing's dub, but then again I never did see the original Japanese version.

This is the proof and quote from the Narutofan I got from the othe forum I was just in... sad ... now I reallii feel like my avatar...

(Tazmo from NarutoFan)
Thanks to AnimeNewsNetwork.com for the following article. It appears that this time, for real, the NARUTO anime series has been licensed by ShoPro Entertainment, one who is merged with VIZ LLC, the American company who has published the NARUTO manga in North America. We can not confirm what the future holds for NARUTO on the internet, but we do know that the BitTorrent trackers will be pulled down tonight most likely. This is the beginning of a new era for all of us.

ShoPro Entertainment, Inc. which recently announced it’s upcoming merger with VIZ, LLC to form one of the entertainment industry's most innovative, comprehensive manga and animation licensing and publishing companies, announced today that it has secured from worldwide licensors, TV TOKYO Corporation and Shueisha Inc., the television, home video and merchandising rights to Naruto for North America and Latin America. The appointment of ShoPro Entertainment as Master Licensor was facilitated by TV TOKYO Medianet, the licensing arm of TV TOKYO.

ShoPro Entertainment, the San Francisco based affiliate of ShoPro Japan, plans to introduce a dynamic roll-out strategy that will leverage the strong manga and entertainment brand into a broad licensing and marketing program. Naruto’s television broadcast partner and key licensing partners will be determined shortly.

You can't turn back and you likely won't. There will still be subbers for Naruto despite it being licensed. Speedsubbers like Dattebayo will probably stick with it. Even still, you should give the dubbed anime a try.

it is true but the good news is naruto part 2 should not be covred by the licencing agreement so when that come out in japan after the supposed long break between part 1 and 2 anbu shoudl be able to sub that, doesnt matter it will still get subbed

This is both good and bad news. It's still too early to tell exactly what kinda dub it will be, whether or not DB and ANBU will continue subbing it. It will probably become next to impossible to find it for bittorrent now, so get ready to use IRC

or when they sound like their 30 when they're supposed to be 15 or so....like in FMA.....That's because most of the voice actors are around 30. Vic, who voices Ed is about 30.

Rashinban
02-15-2005, 08:46 PM
No kidding. I don't see the difference between a grown man who when voicing his character sounds like he smokes 20 packs a day versus a grown woman who when voicing her character sounds like she smokes 20 packs a day. Vic Mignogna is a great voice actor (one of my favorites) and does a wonderful job of capturing Edward's generally scorn attitude as well as his gentle side towards his loved ones. He tries his best, and he does his best, and his best is the best, in my opinion.

Fullmetal Alchemist has some great dubbing, and as much as I sometimes hate the way some of the voices sound on Inuyasha, they do a pretty darn good job as well. I sometimes can't get over Kagome's voice though (who I am praying is not casted as Sakura, but it is probably ineviatble.) All of the characters in Inuyasha capture their character's personality to the best of their abilities, but needless to say they can't hold a candle to the original cast. Nobody will be able to beat Kappei, but Cox doesn't do half bad a job.

I'm sure Naruto's voice cast will be sufficient enough. It probably won't be the greatest, but I doubt it will be something anyone would kill themselves over (except perhaps those radical nitwits who consider anything other than the original as a near sin against God Himself... no offense to any who may be present.)

Animesuki considers Shopro a middle man. They've taken this stance on other anime, I just don't remember which.

> > Naruto "licensed" by ShoPro Entertainment
On February 15th ShoPro Entertainment announced it was appointed the main licensor for Naruto in the USA. This has lead many to claim Naruto has been licensed. However AnimeSuki sees ShoPro only as a middle-man and not an anime company which releases anime themselves. As such we're not marking it licensed yet. Please note that this situtation may change at any time. Also the ShoPro "license" means Naruto is now much more likely to be licensed in the US, especially by VIZ.

Wow, Animesuki changed their tune with the quickness. They have officially moved Naruto to its licensed list. It was announced in a press release that Naruto has been aquired by Cartoon Network ( for an "upfront presentation"). The series is set to air in the third quarter of this year.

Gah, it seems they are going to be using the manga translations after all :(.
Such a busy news day, make sure you read the previous couple of posts incase you missed anything, which you don't want to have. It has been announced that the newly licensed anime series, Naruto, will be airing on Toonami in late 2005. Third quarter 2005 refers to the period between July and September of this year. So it is coming a lot sooner then I personally thought.

Cartoon Network today announced several major acquisitions for their venerable Toonami action-animation block. Fan-favorite "Naruto" will join the block in the third quarter of 2005, while "One Piece" will move to Toonami in May. Toonami original IGPX will expand into a full series from Production IG. "The Batman" will see a Toonami airing beginning April 2, ShoPro acquisition "Zatch Bell" will start in March, and nosehair-fighting anime "Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo" is coming in the fourth quarter. The show will be aimed at young viwers and their parents. Which most likely means we will be seeing the same highly criticized translations that appear in the USA manga, I guess it will be just like American One Piece!

grrr there's going to be so many more Narutards now. Omg and little kids going as Naruto for holloween. That's gonna pain me. I remember when I saw the first DBZ holloween costume. This sucks.

That's very likely, since ShoPro is a division of Viz, who publishes the manga (interestingly enough, Naruto is the only Viz translation job that i would consider bad)

Rashinban
02-17-2005, 08:10 PM
Nah; quite the contrary, "it kicks arse big style!!!! W00t!!!"

We will continue to get fansubs by Dattebayo (and I believe AOne). We will also get a broadcast on American television. If the dub sucks, then the dub sucks, and you can purchase the DVDs with much better audio and video quality than the fansubs, plus a Japanese audio track to listen to. There is nothing to indicate that Naruto will be "butchered," so to put it. Toonami is an adequate venue to release Naruto, though Adult Swim would be better to keep the content pure. If it would go to Adult Swim though, the target audience would be lost and it wouldn't get proper ratings. Viz does not butcher their series... only 4kids does that >_>

Anyways, we will likely see opening and endings if it is Viz and going to take the late slot of the Toonami lineup (like Gundam Seed), and the editing shouldn't be extremely grotesque. Editing will consist of blood edits and swear words. I hightly doubt it will get the kind of treatment Kenshin did, except for during the end of the Zabuza and Haku fight.

i think they're just going to do what they did to FMA - show it on really, really late at night when all the little kids are asleep. The sexy no justsu just makes Naruto what he is, so editing that stuff out (like kakashi's come-come-paradise or make-out violence ^^) is just wrong.

Blue7
05-20-2005, 01:58 AM
It'd be great if Steve Blue/David Lucas (the dub actor who did Spike if you didn't already know) be cast as Kakashi... I think that'd be pretty tyte.

I like subs the most, but some anime can sound better being american dubbed than their japanese counterparts (ie Cowboy Bebop, among others...)

Anyways, I don't wanna start a dub vs sub debate...

Naruto being lisenced by shoPro... that's just great....

Eh, I just happened to revisit this thread because I just remembered a piece of information that doesn't seem to have been mentioned here just yet.

Blue7, as well as pretty much every other living, breathing human (except me), gets his wish. It has been confirmed that David Lucas has been cast as Kakashi in Naruto. The main character has also apparently been cast, but Vic Mignogna (who is interested in joining the Naruto voice acting team) claimed that the name of Naruto's voice actor/actress is unfamiliar to him. Naruto is apparently being voiced by a newcomer, it seems. But I'm sure the biggest piece of news is that David Lucas is indeed voicing Kakashi.

This also confirms that California talent is being used instead of the Canadian Studio Oceangroup (which I was dead sure was going to be the studio for Naruto). Personally, I would rather have had David Lucas voice Zabuza, or have Canadian talent work on Naruto and have Kirby Morrow do Kakashi. Oh well.

Official Voices thus far:

Kakashi - Steven Blum
Ino/Konohamaru - Colleen O'Shaughnessey
Hinata - Stephanie Sheh
3rd Hokage - Steve Kramer

If you have complaints about the dub, then tough luck I guess. Just buy the DVDs and watch the uncut subs. The uncut DVDs will be released in 13 episode boxsets, so don't worry about that. However, the individual DVDs will be edited from what I've heard.

I don't have cable, so It's not so much of a problem for me, but when Naruto is released, will sites stop releasing the fansubs? I'll be dissappointed if they do.

Rashinban
08-14-2005, 03:30 AM
There won't be any change in fansubs at this point unless Viz Media becomes aware of and asks the fansubbers to stop. When a series is licensed is usually when fansubbing groups pack up and move on to other series. Usually, there are some fansubbing groups who stick with the show even after it's licensed. Naruto being shown on television or DVDs coming out won't change a thing in relation to fansubs.

Voice actor update!

Turns out that Kakashi will not be voiced by David Lucas after all. ANN had listed a few false voice actors, and so Viz gave them the correct listing. Anyways, David Lucas, instead of Kakashi, is lending his voice to Zabuza (wahoo!)

Here's the link to the new voice actors:

^^ Really? I thought he would have been a great match for Kakashi, having done Spike Spiegel and all. Zabuza's not a bad matchup either. It'll be interesting to see how the character voices are interpreted.

Heard Naruto say 3 words ("What is that?") in a Cartoon Network promo and it sounded pretty bad.

I just saw the first clip of Naruto on the CN website;

http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/video/toonami/index.html

...wow, just wow...They really love pronouncing that "U" don't they? Ooh, well, at least there's some blood, and Mizuki's voice is pretty cool. I just don't like how young Naruto sounds...or how his name is pronounced...or how they pronounced "Justu"...or how Mizuki's name is pronounced...I do like how crisp the animation looks, though.

i'm so used to reading the naruto manga/watching naruto in japanese, that it actually takes a few seconds to register the jutsu's..

heh, i was quite surprised when they actually showed naruto doing sexy-no-jutsu.. they took out the nosebleeds, though =(

it's actually pretty good though considering it's on cartoon network-i thought they'd ruin it.

If you had asked me if i cared when i was at about episode 130 i would be screaming and tearing my hair out because of this.
But looking at the quality of the series now i aint that fussed if i never see another episode of naruto again, i mean i watch it every week but that dont mean i enjoy it! i'm just hoping that one day it will revert back to how it used to be. Come on, ive heard of a few fillers in an anime but 30 fillers in a row! wow.
.... OK. I will miss it if they stop fansubing it. damb

Shopro usually seems to do quite a professional job, I'm sure it'll be fine...I've been with Lunar for Bleach so far up to this point, and they haven't disappointed...for those of you who also use Lunar - what's up with ichimaru gin's hick accent? Does he speak Japanese with a weird accent or something?

Our feeling is that the Callaway FT-i driver of golf clubs for sale (http://www.hotsalegolf.com/) is best suited to mid to high handicappers who have trouble getting their drives going straight and therefore need all this forgiveness ishiner. If this is you then this is probably the best square driver out there at present.
